Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a mineral that is naturally-occurring in most water sources, as well as in foods like meat, eggs, vegetables, and grains. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps to rebuild weakened enamel by making the teeth more resistant to acid. When present in the bloodstream, fluoride reaches the teeth naturally through the gums and saliva. It is especially important for strengthening the teeth of children, since it is able to become part of the developing teeth and set the foundation for strong teeth and enamel.
Ways to get fluoride include:
- Drinking fluoridated water (in the US, most water systems are fluoridated)
- Using toothpaste and mouthwash that contains fluoride (look for it on the label)
- Visiting our office for a professional fluoride treatment
Anyone can benefit from topical fluoride treatments to prevent tooth decay. We may recommend fluoride treatments to patients who are getting inadequate dietary fluoride, have low saliva levels, consume excessive amounts of sugar, have a history of periodontal disease, and other factors.
