What is a Dental Emergency?
If your tooth was knocked out, cracked, or otherwise severely damaged, you may be wondering if it requires urgent attention or if you can schedule an appointment with your dentist at a convenient time in the future. Although you can put off treatment for some dental problems such as a minor chip in a tooth, there are many situations when immediate care is necessary to prevent further damage. When in need of a qualified dentist, Royersford PA and surrounding areas turn to Esthetic Dental for compassionate care from our highly skilled staff.
Dr. Marjana Knezevic, DMD graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, a leading Ivy League dental school, with honors in Clinical Dentistry. She completed her master’s program and PhD in Oral Medicine. If you are facing a dental emergency, call 610-409-0676 to schedule a same-day appointment with Dr. Knezevic.
Read on to learn seven types of dental emergencies that require immediate treatment:
1. Your Tooth Was Knocked Out
If your tooth was knocked out, it may be possible to reinsert and preserve it—but only if you consult your dentist as soon as possible. Follow these steps if your tooth was knocked out:
Pick up your tooth by the crown and rinse it gently under water, without scrubbing. Do not touch the tooth’s roots.
If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket. Hold it in place and try to bite down gently to prevent it from moving. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, keep it moist at all times by putting it in your mouth next to your cheek, or in a cup of milk. Do not keep it submerged in regular tap water.
Call our office immediately at 610-409-0676 to schedule an urgent appointment. The longer you wait, the less likely it will be that your tooth can be reinserted and preserved.
2. A Tooth Has Become Loose
Call our office right away if your tooth has become loose or has fallen out of alignment. In the meantime, try to hold the tooth gently in the correct position.
3. Fractured or Cracked Tooth
A minor chip in a tooth that doesn't cause pain probably is not an emergency, but if you notice pain or if your tooth was severely cracked or fractured, it may have been damaged on both the inside and outside. This requires urgent care. Clean your mouth by rising with warm water, use a cold compress if the crack was caused by facial trauma, and take acetaminophen to alleviate pain if necessary.
Other dental emergencies that require immediate attention from your dentist include:
Severe facial pain;
A severe laceration or tear in your mouth;
Persistent tissue bleeding; and
Severe infections or abscesses.
